11/09 – ETF Trading – XLF, SKF
XLF closed lower yesterday, but not enough to trigger our exit signals. Updated charts are posted below.
To review, we have a short trade in XLF in progress. Our exit signals for the trade are triggered when the etf price is less than it’s MA(5), or – for a potentially larger gain – when the RSI(2) is less than 30.

11/08 – ETF Trading – XLF, SKF
XLF closed strongly higher on Friday. The etf is severely over-bought and since we’re short, we’re waiting for our etf exit signals to trigger.
Our exit signals are triggered when the closing price for XLF is lower than it’s MA(5), or – for a potentially larger gain – when the RSI(2) is less than 30. We’re using the latter signal.
For the leveraged trade in SKF, follow the trading signals for XLF.
So why didn’t we use stops on our short trade? Some would argue that we should have placed a trading stop at the 200 day moving average. Larry Connors has a great discussion of why stops can actually make your trading returns worse! – you can read it here.

11/05 – ETF Trading – XLF, SKF
XLF closed strongly higher yesterday, enough to trigger taking a second short position.
However, since XLF is now above its 200 day moving average, we will not take a final 3rd short trading position.
We’ll now just wait for our etf exit signals to trigger. Our exit signals are triggered when the closing price for XLF is lower than it’s MA(5), or – for a potentially larger gain – when the RSI(2) is less than 30. We’re using the latter signal. You’ll exit the leveraged trade in SKF on these signals as well.

Our trading signals for IWM did not trigger yesterday. We’ll wait for another day to trade IWM.
The S&P Financial Sector ETF closed higher yesterday, generating an etf shorting opportunity. Consider taking a short position in XLF should the etf close higher today.
If you’re unable to short XLF, consider taking the inverse etf – SKF. However, follow the etf trading signals for XLF. SKF is a double inverse etf – please trade carefully.
XLF – The Financial Select Sector SPDR® Fund, before expenses, seeks to closely match the returns and characteristics of the Financial Select Sector Index.
SKF – ProShares UltraShort Financials seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, that correspond to twice (200%) the inverse (opposite) of the daily performance of the Dow Jones U.S. Financials IndexSM.
We may take up to 3 trading positions over the next couple of days. Our first position is 1/6 of our total trading amount. Our second position is 1/3 of our total trading amount. Our third trading position is 1/2 of our total trading amount. As an alternative, you could take your trades in a 20-30-50 ratio.
