06/22 – ETF Trading – XLF, SKF
The S&P Financial Sector ETF closed higher yesterday, generating an etf shorting opportunity. Consider taking a short position in XLF should the etf close higher today.
If you’re unable to short XLF, consider taking the inverse etf – SKF. However, follow the etf trading signals for XLF. SKF is a double inverse etf – please trade carefully.
XLF – The Financial Select Sector SPDR® Fund, before expenses, seeks to closely match the returns and characteristics of the Financial Select Sector Index.
SKF – ProShares UltraShort Financials seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, that correspond to twice (200%) the inverse (opposite) of the daily performance of the Dow Jones U.S. Financials IndexSM.
We’ll scale in to our trade with a 33-67 ratio – the first trading position at 1/3 of your trading funds; the second trading position (when the closing price pushes the RSI 2 above 94) with the remaining 2/3. All trades are at the market close. Please trade responsibly.
Should we get into the trade, our exit signals are triggered when the closing price for XLF is lower than it’s 5 day moving average, or – for a potentially larger gain – when the RSI 2 is less than 30. Exit SKF on these signals as well.
This etf trading strategy is the RSI 90/94 Strategy found in the book by Larry Connors: High Probability ETF Trading. His etf trading strategies have just a few simple rules and you’ll be able to back-test and apply the strategies to the next trading day. 11/15 – ETF Trading – Gain on XLF, SKF
A winning trade shorting XLF, though our gain was small. Our etf exit signals for XLF triggered at the market close on Friday and we took a gain of just 0.84%. The leveraged etf trade in SKF yielded a gain of nearly 1.42%. Updated charts are posted below.
We have made 30 winning trades out of 38 for the year. That’s a winning percentage of better than 78%. Our goal is to produce more winning trades versus losing trades. On that goal, we’re still on track.
We were lucky to make a gain outside the bounds of our trading signals. Our trading rules for shorting are to trade short only when the price of an etf is below its 200 day moving average. However, XLF was extremely overbought and was due for a correction, and so we made a small gain instead of losing money with a stop-loss order.
I have no etf trading opportunities to suggest today. We’ll wait for the broader market to make a move to present some new etf trading opportunities.
Now is a great time to learn all about etf trading strategies we use here. They’re all contained in the book by Larry Connors: High Probability ETF Trading. Seriously, his etf trading strategies have just a few simple rules and you’ll be able to back-test and apply the strategies to the next trading day. Get your copy today!
