Getting Started in Options

Getting Started in Options

Anyone mystified by stock options or who simply dismisses them as too speculative will find Getting Started in Options an excellent first read on the subject. Beginning with the premise that it’s not the complexity of the investment but that of its language that makes options difficult for new investors to understand, author Michael C. Thomsett has created a guided tour through the lexicon. The result is a nontechnical introduction to these specialized markets.

The book carefully and completely defines the terminology, explains options investing step by step, and presents strategies so that it is easy to understand at each level of risk involved. Choosing the right stock, buying and selling options, and combining techniques are all covered in increasing complexity, but this is a book for beginners, and those with basic knowledge of the subject will want to seek out more advanced reading.

The biggest drawback of this book is that, for some reason, the text is printed in green ink, making it somewhat more difficult to read and probably impossible for those who are green-colorblind. Publisher, take note! –Scott Harrison

An easy-to-read and updated guide to the dynamic world of options investing

During the recent market turmoil, option trading volume actually increased, but many are still unsure of the opportunities that options present, simply because they don’t fully understand how this market works. With Getting Started in Options, Eighth Edition, author Michael C. Thomsett looks to change this. In non-technical, easy-to-follow terms, this accessible guide thoroughly demystifies the options markets, distinguishes the imagined risks from the real ones, and arms investors with the facts they need to make more informed decisions.

  • Opens with an introduction commenting on the recent market turmoil and the growing importance of options
  • Contains new chapters on futures and index options
  • Includes sidebar definitions and easy-to-follow examples that anyone can understand

Besides new examples, updated charts, and timely additions to reflect important changes in the markets, this edition also includes discussions on other important options issues, such as: how to calculate options returns; “test run” activities to try out new theories; and much more.

The Volatility Edge in Options Trading: New Technical Strategies for Investing in Unstable Markets

“Jeff’s analysis is unique, at least among academic derivatives textbooks. I would definitely use this material in my derivatives class, as I believe students would benefit from analyzing the many dimensions of Jeff’s trading strategies. I especially found the material on trading the earnings cycle and discussion of how to insure against price jumps at known events very worthwhile.”

DR. ROBERT JENNINGS, Professor of Finance, Indiana University Kelley School of Business

“This is not just another book about options trading. The author shares a plethora of knowledge based on 20 years of trading experience and study of the financial markets. Jeff explains the myriad of complexities about options in a manner that is insightful and easy to understand. Given the growth in the options and derivatives markets over the past five years, this book is required reading for any serious investor or anyone in the financial service industries.”

MICHAEL P. O’HARE, Head of Mergers & Acquisitions, Oppenheimer & Co. Inc.

“Those in the know will find this book to be an excellent resource and practical guide with exciting new insights into investing and hedging with options.”

JIM MEYER, Managing Director, Sasqua Field Capital Partners LLC

“Jeff has focused everything I knew about options pricing and more through a hyper-insightful lens! This book provides a unique and practical perspective about options trading that should be required reading for professional and individual investors.”

ARTHUR TISI, Founder and CEO, EXA Infosystems; private investor and options trader

In The Volatility Edge in Options Trading, leading options trader Jeff Augen introduces breakthrough strategies for identifying subtle price distortions that arise from changes in market volatility. Drawing on more than a decade of never-before-published research, Augen provides new analytical techniques that every experienced options trader can use to study historical price changes, mitigate risk, limit market exposure, and structure mathematically sound high-return options positions. Augen bridges the gap between pricing theory mathematics and market realities, covering topics addressed in no other options trading book. He introduces new ways to exploit the rising volatility that precedes earnings releases; trade the monthly options expiration cycle; leverage put:call price parity disruptions; understand weekend and month-end effects on bid-ask spreads; and use options on the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) as a portfolio hedge. Unlike conventional guides, The Volatility Edge in Options Trading doesn’t rely on oversimplified positional analyses: it fully reflects ongoing changes in the prices of underlying securities, market volatility, and time decay. What’s more, Augen shows how to build your own customized analytical toolset using low-cost desktop software and data sources: tools that can transform his state-of-the-art strategies into practical buy/sell guidance.

As you begin your journey on the option path, you’ll have the luxury of real-life trade examples to show you the way. The diagrams and charts help turn the complex world of options into easy to visualize and simple to understand strategies that even the most novice of traders can utilize.

Trading Stock Options will show you how you can use options to:
* Get paid to buy and sell your favorite stock
* Purchase stocks for less than their current price
* Buy insurance on stocks in your portfolio
* Profit when stocks lose value
* Perform short-term trades with less money than trading the stock

From the Introduction: ”Through my experiences with option trading, I have tried almost every strategy I could find. In this book, I will be discussing the strategies that I use the most and feel are the best available. I will take you through a number of actual trades as they occurred and show you what I did right and what I did wrong. I will also show you plenty of theoretical examples of how the strategies work and what factors will influence which strategy is the best for whatever situation the market throws in front of you. In 2007 I was the first place finisher in the Zacks.com 4th Quarter 2007 options trading contest with a return of 212%. It hasn’t always been pretty but I have used both my gains and my losses to learn, both of which I’ll be discussing with you.”

From the Back Cover “Many traders and investors dismiss stock options as either too complex or too risky. But did you know that options can be easily understood and the risk easily managed? This book will show you the basics of stock options in easy to understand terminology. You will be able to read option quotes with ease, get an option enabled trading account, and trade basic option strategies in no time.”
